The wartime Cao Dai Buddhist sect militia badge, used during the late 1940s to the mid-1950s, represents the religious militia's active involvement in military struggles against the French and Viet Minh. Toward the end of French administration in 1954 and the establishment of the newly formed Republic of Vietnam, the militia began to integrate into the newly formed Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN).
